Knowing what comes next can make it easier to begin.

Starting therapy can come with plenty of questions — from how the first appointment works to what sessions cost and whether you need to know which treatment approach is right for you.

At SkyBox Therapy, the process is designed to be clear from the beginning.

Shayna provides virtual individual therapy for teens ages 13+ and adults, with a primary focus on OCD, anxiety-related disorders, trauma, ERP, and EMDR.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out. The first conversation is simply a chance to talk through what you’re experiencing and determine what may make sense from there.

What to expect

Getting started

A simple first step, with no pressure to have all the answers.

What does the therapy process look like?

You should understand where you are in the process — and why the work matters.

Shayna takes a structured approach to therapy. Rather than simply meeting from session to session without a clear sense of direction, treatment includes assessment, education, goals, active therapeutic work, and ongoing measurement of progress.

While every client’s experience is individual, therapy generally moves through three broader phases.

1. Beginning: Assessment & Foundation

The beginning of therapy is about developing a clear picture of what’s happening and creating a strong foundation for the work ahead.

This may include discussing your history and current concerns, using assessment tools to better understand your symptoms, establishing baseline outcome measurements, and identifying your treatment goals.

Education is also an important part of this phase.

Shayna wants you to understand not only what you’re being asked to do in therapy, but why a particular treatment approach may help. You’ll begin learning about the patterns you’re experiencing, the therapeutic approach being recommended, and the tools and language you’ll use throughout treatment.

You may recognize this phase because:
You’re still gathering information together, establishing a baseline, setting goals, and learning the framework that will guide your treatment.

2. Middle: Active Treatment & the “Messy Middle”

This is where much of the active therapeutic work happens.

Depending on your treatment plan, that might mean doing exposure work, processing trauma, practicing new responses, challenging established patterns, or applying skills outside of therapy.

It’s also the stage where progress may not always feel linear.

You may notice meaningful improvement and then have a harder week. Something that felt easier may suddenly feel difficult again. That doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve lost your progress.

Shayna continues using outcome measurements throughout treatment so you can look at the broader pattern rather than judging progress based only on how one day or week feels.

You may recognize this phase because:
You’re actively practicing what you’re learning, taking on more challenging work, and beginning to notice changes — even if the process sometimes feels a little messy along the way.

3. Maintenance & Tapering

As symptoms improve and your progress becomes more stable, therapy can begin shifting away from active symptom reduction and toward maintaining what you’ve learned.

The focus becomes reinforcing new patterns, strengthening your ability to manage challenges independently, and reducing the likelihood of falling back into old cycles.

At this stage, shorter or more spaced-out appointments may sometimes become appropriate depending on your individual needs.

You may recognize this phase because:
You’re managing more independently between appointments, your progress is remaining more stable, and therapy is increasingly focused on maintaining what has changed.

Progress isn’t always linear — but it can still be measured.

Therapy can include forward movement, setbacks, difficult weeks, new stressors, and moments where progress is harder to recognize.

That’s one reason Shayna incorporates outcome measurements throughout treatment. Rather than relying only on how a single day or week feels, you can look at patterns over time and get a clearer picture of what is changing, what still needs attention, and what may need to be adjusted.

The goal isn’t to expect perfect, uninterrupted progress. It’s to understand the bigger picture and notice when you’re beginning to respond differently, recover more quickly from setbacks, or use the tools you’ve developed with greater confidence.

Virtual therapy

Therapy from a private space that works for you.

SkyBox Therapy is a telehealth-only practice.

Sessions are primarily provided through SimplePractice, a secure telehealth platform. Google Meet may also be used when needed.

SkyBox Therapy is currently focused on serving clients throughout Arizona. Because therapy licensure is based on where the client is physically located at the time of care, location eligibility will be confirmed as part of the intake process.

For virtual therapy, you’ll need:

  • A private location where you feel comfortable speaking openly

  • A reliable internet connection

  • A computer, tablet, or phone with video and audio capability

Your environment can matter, particularly during specialized treatment such as ERP or EMDR. Shayna can talk with you about what may be helpful based on the type of therapy you’re receiving.

Clear pricing before you begin.

SkyBox Therapy offers several appointment lengths depending on your treatment needs.

90-Minute Session — $250

60-Minute Session — $169

45-Minute Session — $130

30-Minute Session — $100

Session options and fees

What session length should I expect?

60-minute sessions are the most typical starting point.

Depending on the treatment you’re receiving, longer sessions may sometimes be appropriate. Certain ERP or EMDR work, for example, may benefit from additional time.

As you move into a maintenance phase, shorter sessions may sometimes become appropriate.

Shayna will discuss session length with you based on your individual treatment plan rather than expecting you to determine that on your own.

Insurance and payment

SkyBox Therapy is a private-pay practice.

SkyBox Therapy does not bill insurance directly.

Payment is due at the time of service and is processed through SimplePractice/Stripe using the payment method kept on file.

Accepted payment methods include:

  • Major credit cards

  • Debit cards

  • FSA cards

  • HSA cards

Your intake paperwork will include a credit card authorization form so payment information can be securely established before treatment begins.

Can I use out-of-network insurance benefits?

Although SkyBox Therapy does not submit claims to insurance companies, superbills can be provided for clients who would like to submit their sessions to their insurance provider for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

Coverage and reimbursement vary by insurance plan, so providing a superbill does not guarantee that your insurance company will reimburse any portion of your session fee.

If you plan to use out-of-network benefits, it may be helpful to contact your insurance provider directly to learn more about your specific plan.

Cancelation policy
